What is a PADI Divemaster?

A PADI Divemaster is a trained dive professional who can guide certified divers, help instructors during courses, give dive briefings, manage groups in the water, and support everyday dive-centre operations. The PADI Divemaster Course is the first professional step in the PADI system and is designed to build strong diving, rescue, leadership, and supervision skills. A Divemaster cannot independently certify new scuba divers, but they can assist a PADI Instructor and run certain approved diving and snorkelling activities.

PADI stands for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. It is one of the world’s best-known scuba-diving training organisations and provides courses from beginner level all the way to professional instructor training. When you join a PADI Divemaster Course in Pattaya, you follow PADI’s training standards and receive a certification that is recognised by PADI dive centres in many countries.

The usual path looks like this:

  1. PADI Open Water Diver
This is your first scuba certification and teaches you the basic skills needed to dive safely.
  2. PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
You build more experience and complete different types of dives, usually including deep diving and underwater navigation.
  3. Emergency First Response training
You need current CPR and first-aid training completed within the last 24 months.
  4. PADI Rescue Diver
This course teaches you how to prevent problems, respond to emergencies and help other divers.
  5. Reach at least 40 logged dives
You need 40 logged dives to start professional Divemaster training.
  6. Meet the other entry requirements
You must normally be at least 18 years old and have a diving medical form signed by a doctor within the previous 12 months.
  7. Start your PADI Divemaster Internship
During the training, you complete dive theory, swim tests, a scuba-skills circuit, rescue assessments, workshops, dive-site mapping, guiding practice and real experience assisting instructors.
  8. Reach at least 60 logged dives
You need 60 logged dives and must complete all course requirements before receiving your PADI Divemaster certification.

Specialty courses such as Deep Diver, Wreck Diver or Search and Recovery can be helpful, but they are not normally required to start the Divemaster course.

To join a PADI Divemaster Internship, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a PADI Rescue Diver certification or an accepted equivalent, and have at least 40 logged dives. You also need CPR and first-aid training completed within the last 24 months, plus a medical form signed by a doctor within the last 12 months. You must have at least 60 logged dives before you can receive your Divemaster certification.

You need at least 40 logged dives before starting a PADI Divemaster Course in Pattaya and at least 60 logged dives before certification. During a longer training program, you may complete some of the remaining dives while gaining experience with local reefs, wrecks, boat diving, and different conditions.

You must be at least 18 years old to become a PADI Divemaster and work as a full PADI professional. Divers aged 15 to 17 may be able to take the Junior Divemaster program, but Junior Divemasters cannot independently supervise dives or work as certified assistants.

Yes. You must hold a PADI Rescue Diver certification or a qualifying certification from another recognised training organisation before beginning the PADI Divemaster Course. Your rescue skills are important because the training includes emergency management, problem-solving, diver supervision, and a rescue assessment.

The length of a PADI Divemaster Course Thailand program depends on your experience, number of logged dives, study progress, and how much real-world training is included. An intensive course may take a few weeks, while a full internship can run for one or several months and give you more time to practise guiding, assist instructors, and become comfortable working as part of a dive team.

The standard course covers all the knowledge, skills, workshops, and assessments required for certification. A PADI Divemaster Internship normally includes the same required training but gives you more time inside a working dive centre, where you can assist with real courses, prepare equipment, help on boats, practise briefings, and gain more experience with certified divers.

During the PADI Divemaster Course in Pattaya, you will study dive theory, risk management, diver safety, the underwater environment, and the role of a dive professional. Your practical training normally includes swim tests, a 24-skill demonstration circuit, rescue practice, search and recovery, deep-diving exercises, dive-site mapping, briefings, guiding certified divers, and assisting instructors with student courses.

After completing the PADI Divemaster Course, you can:

  • Guide certified divers on fun dives
  • Plan and organise dive trips
  • Give dive briefings
  • Supervise groups in the water
  • Help manage diver safety
  • Assist PADI Instructors during pool and open-water courses
  • Demonstrate scuba skills to students
  • Help with equipment preparation and dive-site setup
  • Support daily boat and dive-centre operations
  • Conduct approved activities such as Discover Local Diving, ReActivate, Discover Snorkeling and the PADI Skin Diver course, depending on your active status and any extra training required

A Divemaster cannot independently teach and certify new scuba divers. To do that, you need to complete the Instructor Development Course and become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

After you become a PADI Divemaster, the next professional step is usually the PADI Instructor Development Course, or IDC. The IDC prepares you to teach PADI courses, and after passing the Instructor Examination, you can become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

You can also work as a Divemaster first, gain more experience guiding divers and assisting instructors, then continue toward instructor level when you feel ready. Many people who want to Become a PADI Divemaster use it as the first step toward a long-term career in diving.

Yes, it matters a lot. A good PADI Divemaster Internship should give you more than the minimum skills needed to pass. You need real experience guiding divers, assisting instructors, preparing boats and equipment, giving briefings, handling problems, and working as part of a professional dive team.

At Jomtien Dive Center, you train at a PADI 5 Star Dive Center with two large private dive boats, multilingual instructors, and access to both reef and wreck diving around Pattaya. You also have the chance to learn from PADI Platinum Course Director Gary Phillips, who has more than 30 years of experience in professional diver and instructor development. This gives you proper mentoring and helps you build real confidence, not just collect another certification.
