FAQs About PADI Discover Scuba Diving in Pattaya and Samaesan
Here are the most common questions we get from divers, snorkelers, and guests before booking scuba diving in Pattaya and Samaesan with Jomtien Dive Center.
What is PADI Discover Scuba Diving?
It is a beginner-friendly experience for anyone who wants to try scuba diving for the first time. You will learn the basic safety rules, practise a few simple skills and enjoy a closely supervised dive with a PADI Professional. It is an introduction to diving, not a full scuba certification course.
What is PADI?
PADI is one of the world’s best-known scuba training organisations. It uses clear, step-by-step teaching and internationally recognised standards, which makes scuba diving a safe and simple way to try scuba diving for the first time.
Do I need any previous diving experience?
No. PADI Discover Scuba Diving is designed for complete beginners, so you do not need a diving licence or any previous experience. A PADI Professional will explain the equipment, teach you the basic skills and stay close while you experience scuba diving in Pattaya for the first time.
Do I need to know how to swim?
You do not need to be a strong swimmer or pass a swimming test for try diving, but you should feel reasonably comfortable in the water. Tell our dive center in Pattaya before booking if you cannot swim or feel nervous in deep water, so we can recommend the safest option.
Is PADI Discover Scuba Diving safe for beginners?
Yes, it is designed specifically for first-time divers. Your Scuba Diving trip includes a safety briefing, basic skill practice, properly fitted equipment and close supervision from a PADI Professional. Like all adventure activities, scuba diving in Thailand carries some risk, but these steps are in place to make your first experience as safe and comfortable as possible.
What happens during the experience?
Your scuba diving begins with some paperwork, a short safety briefing and an introduction to your equipment. You will practise breathing underwater, using your buoyancy jacket, clearing your mask, recovering your regulator and equalizing your ears before enjoying a supervised dive. It is a relaxed, step-by-step way to try scuba diving without committing to a full course.
How deep will I go?
The maximum depth for try scuba diving trip is 6 metres during the initial pool or confined-water session and 12 metres during an open-water dive. These are maximum limits, not targets, so you will only descend as far as you feel comfortable while scuba diving in Pattaya.
How long will I be underwater?
A dive during Discover Scuba Diving commonly lasts around 30 to 50 minutes, depending on your breathing rate, comfort and the conditions. At our dive center in Pattaya, the two-dive ocean package is a full-day boat trip, although the actual time underwater is naturally shorter.
What if I feel nervous or panic underwater?
Feeling nervous before diving is completely normal, especially when everything is new. Your instructor stays close, takes things slowly and helps you become comfortable before going deeper. Many people feel anxious before their first experience of scuba diving in Thailand, but quickly relax once they get used to breathing underwater.
What if I feel uncomfortable breathing underwater?
Breathing through a regulator may feel strange at first, but it supplies air whenever you breathe in. During scuba diving, you will practise at the surface or in shallow water until you feel ready to continue. For many beginners, this is the most unfamiliar part of scuba diving in Pattaya, so there is no need to rush.
Can I run out of air underwater?
Running out of air should not happen during a properly supervised PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience. You and your instructor keep an eye on the pressure gauge, and the dive ends well before the cylinder becomes empty. Our dive center in Pattaya also keeps you under direct professional supervision throughout your first dive.
What should I bring with me?
For PADI Discover Scuba Diving, bring your swimwear, a towel, dry clothes and sun protection. A reusable water bottle and a change of clothes are also useful for a boat day. When planning scuba diving in Thailand, avoid drinking alcohol beforehand and arrive rested, hydrated and ready for the day.
Can I wear glasses or contact lenses while diving?
Normal glasses cannot be worn underneath a scuba mask, but many people use soft contact lenses or a prescription mask during discover scuba diving. Tell us about your eyesight before booking so we can discuss the most comfortable option when you try scuba diving.
Can I take underwater photos or use a camera?
During your first PADI scuba diving experience, it is better to concentrate on breathing, communicating and following your instructor rather than operating a camera. Ask us before your day of scuba diving in Pattaya if you would like photos or videos, and we can explain the available options.
Can my friend snorkel while I am diving?
